Overall Teledensity in India reaches 47.89 with 562.21 million subscriber base

The growth of telephone users and Mobile user’s rate in India has attained a mark which is beyond our expectations. Now a day’s all the Telecom Operators begins the day by unleashing different plans and attractive value added services to sustain their market position and to rope more subscriber base.

The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 562.21 million at the end of December-09 from 543.20 million in Nov thereby registering a growth rate of 3.50%. With this, the overall teledensity in India reaches 47.89.

This achievement is attained by increased wireless subscription base to 525.15 million users and addition of 19.10 million new wireless users followed by broadband subscription of 7.83 million users. But there occurred a downfall in wire line subscription of 37.06 leading to decline by 0.09 million.

Wireline Segment:

Wireline subscriber base declined from 37.16 million to 37.06 million in December 2009 this downfall reflected the loss of 0.12 million subscribers from BSNL and MTNL. Thes two telecom giants hold 85.22% of the wireline market share.

Broadband Subscriber Segment:

Total Broadband (>= 256 Kbps download) subscriber base has increased from 7.57 million to 7.83 million in December thereby showing a growth of 3.56%.

Tata Teleservices Limited, India’s fastest-growing pan-India dual-technology telecom service provider, emerged as the Number One telecom operator in the country for the fifth consecutive month in December, in terms of new subscriber additions, adding more than 3.3 million subscribers in the month.

Tata Teleservices Limited has added 3,336,476 new subscribers in December 2009 from its CDMA and GSM operations put together. In November 2009 too, TTSL had showed a healthy growth in new additions, with 3,329,215 new subscribers being added.

Wireless Service Net Addition during the Month in %:

Bharti Airtel is still the largest operator in the country with over 118 million subscribers on its network, while Tata Teleservices has about 57 million users on both CDMA and GSM platforms. The total number of mobile phone users in the country now stands at 525.15 million compared with 506.04 million in November. Airtel added 2.85 million users by the month of December.

Reliance Communications ranks third by adding 2.8 million users in December and now it has now has a total subscriber base of 94 million.

Idea Cellular, which had recorded its best performance in November by adding over 2.5 million users’ added just 1.7 million users in December, taking its total subscriber base to 58 million.

Vodafone is consistent with 2.7 million subscriber addition in December and totally it serves for 91 million users. Aircel added 1.6 million users in December sways with 31 million subscriber base. Sistema Shyam, a new entrant in the CDMA space, added 0.4 million users in December.

The new entrant Uninor dazzles with 1.2 million i.e. 12 lakh subscribers as a result of first month-end. The approximate list of Uninor subscribers in lakhs is as follows,

  • UP (W) (incl. Uttarakhand) -1.51
  • UP (E)-  1.72
  • Bihar (incl Jharkhand) – 1.27
  • Orissa  -0.44
  • Andhra Pradesh- 1. 57
  • Tamil Nadu (incl. Chennai)   -   2.02
  • Kerala  -0.90
  • Karnataka-  2.64
