broadbandBSNL has vibrated its dream project worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) technology starting with Ajmer in Rajasthan.

With an aim to provide the rural areas with high speed wireless broadband connectivity the project was initiated at Rs 225 crore. The service was launched at a function in Pisangan Telephone Exchange in Ajmer district by the Minister of State Sachin Pilot.

Rural areas can avail this service with a starting tariff of Rs 140 per month. BSNL has already planned to spend approximately Rs 1,200 crore for rural WiMAX.

By this launch, a technology boost up is attained with an enhanced broadband speed of 7 Mbps at a distance of 15 km with mobility in wireless broadband. WiMAX technology is the latest 4th generation wireless broadband service working in 2.5 GHz band.

The high speed wireless broadband connectivity will offer video conferencing, enabling tele-medicine and tele-education, besides providing other services like payment of utility bills, issue of birth certificates, land records, vehicle registration etc.

WiMax services covers more than 200 base stations in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. In the first phase BSNL would cover 1000 block headquarters across the country and the remaining block headquarters be connected through 50,000 common service centers’ in next segment.

This project will be associated with all ‘common service centres’ in rural areas, which are associated with e-governance projects started by the state governments. The rural common service centres are part of the ‘Bharat Nirman Programme’ of the UPA government.

BSNL WiMax Service will provide high speed wireless broadband connectivity to 11,500 common service centres in respective blocks.
