Sony Ericsson has just evaluated its position and has announced that it is closing some locations and push 2,000 employees out of the company. It has decided to put an end to its Research Triangle Park operation by the third quarter of 2010. It disclosed this proposal on Wednesday after an hour of meeting.
It has determined to throw 420 local employees out of work and projected to cut 2,000 jobs companywide. With the view of Global consolidation of regional offices the joint venture will move its North American headquarters to Atlanta and the North American R&D department will move to Redwood Shores, California., just exterior to San Francisco, where the company currently works on smart phones.
Due to excellent infrastructure amenities especially Air transport and bagging a large number of customers from AT&T are the main reason to choose Atlanta as its Headquarters. Those workers who qualify will receive division pay and some will be given the opportunity to work in Atlanta or in California.
Last year the company-wide cost cutting plan led to the loss of 2,000 jobs so now the company holds only 9900 employees globally. Offices in Miami, Seattle and San Diego also will seal. Miami operations get closed because its joint venture Latin American Business gets consolidated into North American operations.
Sony Ericsson’s Indian office merges with Asia-pacific region and its Chennai office work will be shifted to Lund, in Sweden and gets phased out to the development center in Kista. The consolidation will leave Sony Ericsson with four R&D centers located in Lund, Tokyo, Beijing and Redwood Shores.
Sony Ericsson is the fourth largest handset maker with a 4.9% market share. And it has decided to cut costs now, before launching its first Android powered model, the Xperia X10.
