m-Learning facet : IL&FS-Tata Indicom ‘s English Seekho Initiative

Now learn english from your mobile! A new dimension in our handy cellphone’s VAS platform is the M-Learning. IL&FS, in association with Tata Indicom launches the all new “English Seekho” Mobile Learning programme. Adding a value to the mobile phone media, Tata Indicom takes the credit to empower itself by providing first of such a service to India.
The Product
‘English Seekho’, is a telephone-based tutor where a user calls a premium phone number and the speech recognition engine imparts a course in basic spoken English. “We launched it in collaboration with ILFS-ETS. It took us six months to develop the product technically. Tata Indicom recently launched it nationwide,” said Abinash Tripathy, advisor of Enterux Solutions Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai-based firm.
Through ‘English Seekho, one can learn English concepts through audio based lessons, recorded in an easy-to-listen radio style. The user is allowed to practice what is heard using interactive multiple choice questions on the IVR (Interactive Voice Response). In addition, the user can also speak sentences in English that are analyzed an advanced speech recognition engine for pronunciation mistakes. And finally, an SMS is sent to the user’s phone containing a summary of each lesson. The entire course thus provides an audio, visual & practice confirmations to the user.
Charges
“English Seekho is now being offered at a subscription of Rs 20 per month and 60 paise per call. We are developing products on the same platform for agriculture, rural healthcare, AIDS awareness and pre-primary education,” said Abinash.
For whom
It is an initiative that is come out for the rural or remote area youth across the Indian subcontinent. Where english learning still involves costly less effective classroom courses, English Seekho is intended to be a world class cost-effective mobile programme.
Also to those youth who are appearing for screening tests in call center, such a programme can act as a mock session. Though not specifically launched to get trained for such call centers, your TATA mobile can still guide you the right way with English Seekho.
