The government telecom company, considered to be the No.4 mobile operator in India, BSNL has stepped into third generation services. The services will start functioning in 11 cities and will be further extended to other areas spread over the country. The 27 billion rupee project-oriented service will cover for necessary infrastructure to be erected in major cities and potential commercial areas. In due course, probably later this year, the service will go for an auction bid in which the private operators can muscle their strength.

By now, the government agencies like BSNL, MTNL are given a single slot. To cope up the swift competition from the private operators, the BSNL has geared up the fray by providing this 3G service. It is known that people go in for this 3G for high speed internet access, games and a host of multimedia content – maps, music- via mobile handsets. As of now, the BSNL’s service is available across the country barring New Delhi and Mumbai where MTNL is in the field.
