Promising New Year for GSM operators – January Subscription figures

The dawn of this New Year has been promising for the GSM operators with a thumping steep in the subscriber rate during the month of January alone – 9.3 million, an addition to the December figure of 257.85 million taking the toll to 267.54 million in the country. This increase is sans the Reliance Telecom and the increase percentage for the month of January is 3.6 percent. Among the telecom operators, Bharti Airtel still maintains the top slot with the subscriber base of 88.38 million by January, thereby adding 2.73 million and amounting to a market share of 33.04 percent.

Vodafone mustered an addition of 2.4 million subscribers taking its toll with an increase of 3.95 percent and the market share being 23.68 percent. However, the net subscriber base for Vodafone is 63.34 million. The main losers are the government owned telecom operators – Bsnl lost its grip by slipping its market share to 15.95 percent from its earlier 16.05 percent. This figure is after the addition of 1.3 million new subscribers and the net subscriber rate is 42.67 million. MTNL (operating in Delhi and Mumbai) got an addition of 1 lakh subscribers and took the total subscribers to 4 million. The upcoming Idea Cellular received a confident subscriber base (an increase of 5.27 percent) by adding 2 million subscribers and making the net figures to 40 million.
