BSNL to officially start the launch of WiMax in Ahmedabad

Posted on the January 19th, 2009 under WiMax by vicky

BSNL is all set to begin its WiMax services starting from Ahmedabad by the end of this month. The basic idea of the project is to make hi-speed ‘wireless connectivity’ to users in the city.

Ahmedabad WiMax Project is part of the WiMax pilot project, for which around 10 cities across the country have been identified, which include Ahmedabad, Banglore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Hisar, Pinjore, Rohtak and Panipat. Though these tests were conducted in cities (in 2007), BSNL would focus on deploying WiMax in rural areas. BSNL said, it is going to spend Rs 1,600 crore on the deployment of WiMax and its new infrastructure. It aims to cover 25,000 villages within a year.

Despite the auction process for WiMAX spectrum having not been completed, BSNL has already received spectrum in three circles; Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. With the DoT postponing the BWA and WiMax auctions , the deployement of  WiMax may be susceptible for a delay.
