No need to drive in to a theater, no need to book advance tickets for a movie, a theater away theater and that too at home itself. That sounds fantastic and eccentric. A novel concept of bringing in the movie into home is all set to start, everything legally and authentically. Following the imminent success and fame of Direct-to-Home (DTH), the next stage of exploiting the technology is on procuring revenue for the companies in the said field while serving the people with comfort and convenience at the time of their choice.
Pay-per-view, abbreviated as PPV, is designed to feed the people’s desire for watching movies at home at a nominal payment. PPV is aptly bracketed with mobile content and gaming as the sources of grabbing revenue, and the concept is seen as a promising one for the DTH operators. The viewers will be offered the update menu of movies at an interval of once in two weeks and the fee will be in the range of Rs25- Rs80, based on the scheme – monthly rental / membership basis.
According to KPMG, an audit and consulting firm, at present there are 7-8 million subscribers of DTH in India, which is expected to go up to 25-27 million by 2012. PPV has the blessings and contributions from top notch companies in the DTH – Essel Group’s Dish TV, Tata Sky a breed of the joint venture between Tata group and Star TV, BIG TV of Reliance Communications and Digital TV from Bharti Airtel. The scheme, PPV has no set of specified conditions stipulated for the viewers; the movies will be sold for certain time factor on a non-exclusive mode. Every sale is bound with the star cast, occasion of the release and above all, the box-office feedback.
DTH operators have an edge over the film distributors in releasing the movie. According to PPV norm, Hindi and regional movies will be offered through other means while the movies of international means are seen to catch in rapidly, says an official from UTV group. Nevertheless, there has been a soft pedaling from some section of the film industries like Indian Film Company, which sees less potential from PPV because of hindrance for minimum guarantee. However, KPMG research official has a moderate view on this PPV, as he sees it as an initial stage for procuring revenue.
The film industry depends, much for its revenue , theatrical screening and home video sales, of which the earlier one fetching three-fourth of the net revenue. DTH operators view on other way and pushing forward the concept to pull on more subscribers, which will ultimately induce the film producers to demand better rates for this PPV. We shall hope that PPV has no anti-climax, in this run.
